A lack of both historical and current political understanding regarding Somalis is causing more confusion and harm.
✔️ In 1962, about 90% of Somalis in the North Eastern region did not want to be part of Kenya. They preferred to secede and join the Republic of Somalia after independence.
✔️ This led to the Shifta War from 1963 to 1967, where they fought because Jomo Kenyatta forced them to remain part of Kenya.
✔️ Most Boranas, Gabras, and Rendiles opposed joining Somalia since they have stronger ties with the Ethiopian tribes.
✔️ All Kenyan Somalis ancestral land is in Garissa, Wajir, and Mandera, which make up the North Eastern region with different clans.
✔️ Boranas, Gabras, and Rendiles ancestral land is in Upper Eastern or the former Eastern region. They don't speak Somali.
✔️ Somalis don't identify Boranas as their people and also call them Gurale the same way they call others Nywele ngumus. True.
✔️ The Somali shifta fighters ambushed and killed DC Daudi Wabera, a Borana, near Merti. Nairobi’s Wabera Street. is named in his honor. He was against secession.
✔️ There are Ethiopian Somalis Djibouti Somalis and Somalia Somalis which reflects their citizenship rather than tribe or race.
✔️ Therefore, Kenyan Somalis cannot return to Somalia; they are both Kenyan citizens and Kenyan nationals. Ushago kwao ni North Eastern region of Kenya. Sio Somalia.
✔️ No tribe came to Kenya because there was no Kenya when everyone had already settled. The territories occupied by different tribes became Kenya after mzungus came in 1840s.
✔️ The North Eastern region accounts for only 22% of Kenya’s total land area. The larger combined Northern Eastern area (including Upper Eastern) makes up 37%, not half or 45%.
✔️ In 2025, the total GDP output of the North Eastern region (Garissa, Wajir, and Mandera) was less than 250 billion Kenyan shillings, indicating a need for significant investment.
✔️ Over the past 13 years of devolution, the North Eastern region has received more than 300 billion Kenyan shillings but still lags behind in development. Bad leadership.
✔️ Given these hard facts, should Somalis from Kenya’s North Eastern region join Greater Somalia because most people don't seem to be happy with their lack of loyalty to the state?
✔️ Or, shouldn't the government just identify or differentiate between Kenyan Somalis and Somalia Somalis? The same way it identifies Ugandan Luos, Tanzanian Maasais etc ?
